A day in the Life of a Consultant – Accenture Industry Masterclass

On Friday, 12 December, 20 students from St Gabriel’s and St Bonaventure’s Schools made their way to Accenture Head Offices in Fenchurch Street to learn about Media, Communications and Technology industry supported by enthusiastic Accenture volunteers.

65To students’ excitement, Accenture organised a tour and demonstration at their Innovation Hub. During the demonstration students had a chance to discover how state-of-the-art technology can help them on a daily basis, before putting their own consultancy skills to the test in the exciting and engaging Accenture Industry Masterclass.

It was a great chance for young people to explore an entirely new world of career opportunities, in a terrific business environment and working alongside experienced volunteers.

During the Young Enterprise Industry Masterclass, young people were engaged in series of interactive and fun activities, which helped them find out who are Accenture’s competitors and what are the challenges facing them on a day to day basis.

The students thought that the Accenture volunteers helped them to develop vital skills such as problem solving and communication and developed their ability to analyse their own strengths and weaknesses.

“It has been a very positive day and made me more aware of things I want to do in the future, and it really put me on a good track. I’ve learnt to be more observant and developed ability to analyse different working areas, markets and competitors. I am really looking forward to doing similar programmes again if I get the opportunity. I didn’t know about Accenture before I came here, but I’ve learnt a lot and I think I will try specialising in technology. It seems like a good career path for me.” – Jayden Coleman, student at St Bonaventure’s School.

9“I am really enjoying the day and I think it will have a positive impact on the students as it opens their eyes and makes them realise the opportunities available for them.

“Todays programme also allows them to realise that technology is a very big part of every day life and will get them thinking of their future choices and what industries they would like to get involved in. I am positive that today students developed crucial skills like communication and networking, and gained more confidence.” – Keon Reeves, Learning Mentor, St Bonaventure’s School.

“Today was a good opportunity for the students to see the corporate side of things, what life in 35the city is like and how the world of work is different from school. Today opened their minds up and encouraged them to think in different ways. It got them to think of the jobs that they can actually do, the talents that they think they have.

“A lot of students in the current climate are reluctant to step outside of their comfort zone and this day showed them that this is what they will have to do in real life. By voicing their ideas in front of people they don’t know, the students developed confidence and self esteem.

48“Accenture volunteers today were great, they were very clear in explaining career paths and encouraging students to pin down their ideas on paper. They have been really accommodating. I would most definitely do it as often as possible because it’s the best way for young people to see the other side of life which young people don’t get a chance to see in the academic setting.” – Justin Taylor, Exams Officer, St Gabriel’s School.

“The industry masterclass was a fantastic day and provided us with the opportunity to work with the students and introduce them to the work we do on a day to day basis.  The students were very interested in all the different activities and the Accenture case studies enabled them to use the skills they learnt throughout the day. It was lovely working with YE and the support they provided leading up to the day and throughout the masterclass was invaluable.  I look forward to working with them again in the future.” – Catherine Cranston, Management Consulting, Accenture.
