Michael Mercieca FCMA CGMA – Chief Executive
Michael Mercieca was appointed Chief Executive of Young Enterprise in
April 2012. He has overseen a period of financial and operational growth including in September 2014, the merger of the Personal Finance Education Group (pfeg) into Young Enterprise. Michael is currently Chair of the European Chief Executives for not for profit organisation JA Worldwide. He was previously Director of Finance & Operations at The Prince’s Trust which he joined in 2003, with responsibility for Finance, Corporate Support Services, Programme Design and operations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Michael began his career in manufacturing at GKN and Racal before switching to the media sector, joining BBC Worldwide followed by Sky and then various independent film and TV production companies including Mentorn. Through his own firm, Media Gap, Michael has advised companies such as Yellow Pages, NTL (now Virgin Media), Cable & Wireless and The Co-operative Bank. He qualified as a Chartered Management Accountant in 1980 and is a Fellow of the Institute (FCMA).
Sharon Davies – Chief Operating Officer
Sharon is responsible for leading Young Enterprise’s operations including programme delivery and support of staff, volunteers and centre leads. She oversaw the merger of pfeg (Personal Finance Education Group) into Young Enterprise in September 2014, supporting staff through the transition phase into YE.
Sharon is an MBA qualified director with a strong track record in the planning and implementation of successful organisational change within not for profit organisations.
She is a qualified youth worker and is highly experienced in the delivery of informal education in a range of settings, including detached youth work, across the North West. She led the Connexions service in North Cumbria immediately before joining Young Enterprise, managing a large multi functional team to provide information, advice, guidance, support and personal development opportunities to young people. Passionate about access to provision of opportunity for young people, Sharon has worked with youth organisations for 23 years.
Sharon is a graduate of Liverpool John Moore’s University and post graduate of Leicester University. She is a keen scuba diver and lives in Lancashire.
Liz Crossley – Chief Financial Officer
Liz is an FCA Chartered Accountant, who trained at Arthur Andersen providing strong foundations in technical accounting. She then spent four and a half years in Finance Transformation Management Consulting with PwC Consulting/ IBM, helping to develop best practice finance functions in large media companies.
Wanting to put the skills learnt in practice to good use, Liz joined The Prince’s Trust helping to move Finance to become a partner to the organisation. After a three year stint in Dubai as part of the Commercial Finance team of pay TV platform Showtime, Liz returned to the charity sector in the UK as Director of Finance at Fairbridge, the inner city charity working with disengaged young people. Liz helped to steer Fairbridge through its merger with The Prince’s Trust.
Liz lives in Surrey and has three young children which keep her very busy, but loves being outside in the fresh air enjoying the countryside when possible.
Michelle Benson – Director of Development
Michelle joined Young Enterprise in March 2016, she has over 20 years experince in marketing and fundraising spanning the private and voluntary sectors in the UK and internationally. Before joining YE Michelle was a member of the Senior Mangement Team for both Impetus The Private Equity Foundation and for The Schools for Social Entrepreneurs.
Michelle has a strong track record in marketing and fundraising, under her direction charities such as Mencap, Shelter and The Children’s Society all benefited from a significant growth in income from a broader audience base.
Michelle was the Managing Director of Good Business, a leading UK responsible business consultancy, in addition to holding a senior position within Creative Targets, a New York based marketing agency. Working with clients such as Nike, American Express and Paramont Pictures on pan American campaigns.
Michelle is the Deputy Chair of Trustees for Able2Achieve, a charity that enables people with learning disabilities to persoanlly achieve and progress by developing essential skills and self confidence through learning, living and working.
Living in Surrey with her partner and three children, she enjoys making the most of living in the countryside and being an active member of the community.
Roy Howard – Regional Director of Programmes and Delivery South
Roy is responsible for leading the development and management of Young Enterprise’s relationships with schools, colleges and universities along with the recruitment, training and support of our adult volunteers.
Roy has worked for Young Enterprise in London since 2003, most lately as its Operations Director, where he has held line management responsibility for all field staff and their liaison with schools.
He has considerable experience and expertise in managing large numbers of staff in remote locations through former senior management responsibilities in Barclays Bank as head of UK International Operations, Head of Customer Services and Head of Service Management.
Roy grew up and was educated in London. He holds a commission in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, is the Treasurer of the London Wing of the Air Training Corps and the Chairman of the Civilian Committee of the Westminster & Chelsea Air Cadet Squadron. Roy lives in Essex.
Peter Richards – Regional Director of Programmes and Delivery North
Peter took up the position of Regional Director (North) in November 2012. He is responsible for the programmes and delivery function across the North West, North East, Yorkshire and Humber, the Midlands and Wales.
Peter was educated at Manchester Metropolitan University and he has worked at a Director level for Groundwork for the past 14 years and has a strong reputation both for innovation and for building successful partnerships across the public, private and voluntary sectors.
He has a particular interest in business strategy and has much experience of development in the Voluntary Sector across the North of England. He has considerable experience in developing organisational strategy, business planning and team building across a wide geographic area.
Originally from Oxford, but brought up in the North East his interests include mountain biking, camping and inexpert guitar playing.
