Team are runners-up in Plymouth enterprise contest

Marine Academy Plymouth Young Enterprise team come so close!

A group of academy students including Young Enterprise stars have finished second in the annual Plymouth University Enterprise Shield Inter School Challenge.

Students from eight schools in Devon and Cornwall were set the challenge to develop a product that was highly ethical and did not damage the environment.

The team from Marine Academy Plymouth (MAP) planned, designed and developed the concept of wind chimes using recycled metals.

Year 13 business studies student Jamie Silifant said: “It was brilliant, the best business activity I’ve ever done.”

Jamie had booked his place in the team by being part of the team that won MAP’s first Accountancy Challenge in partnership with the Chartered Institute of Accountancy for England and Wales the previous week, along with Kallum Lashbrook and Robbie Johns.

These three were joined by Katie Knapman and Kevin Kripatis who are active in both MAP’s Young Enterprise team and the Year 13 and Year 12 Shares4Schools teams.

From eight teams, the MAP team made the final two and then went head to head with Teignmouth in an ‘elevator pitch’ of the product they had developed.

The judges could not split the two teams so opened it up to a vote from the floor.

With over 40 votes cast, MAP fell just two votes short of victory.

In the past three years MAP students have won the competition.

Kallum said: “We went there and gave it our best. We have a lot to be proud about.”

Mr Rodgers, leader of learning for business and enterprise, said: “This is another fantastic achievement from our business students at MAP.

“They have consistently performed in these events applying the business acumen developed in class to real life scenarios successfully, not only matching the best that Devon and Cornwall have to offer but also the whole of the UK.

“We are keen to allow them to test their mettle against students from schools throughout the country, building their confidence and preparing them for careers in the business industries.”
