Ellis Walby

Ellis Walby participated in Young Enterprise at school and decided to give back to the next generation of by volunteering as a Business Advisor on our Company Programme.

“I wish other people knew just how much of a positive impact YE has on particular individuals. You never know from where the next Richard Branson will appear. I wish more people could see just how well YE encourages individuals to be flexible, creative, confident, organised and business minded.”

Why did you decide to volunteer with Young Enterprise?

I remember being involved with Young Enterprise as a student myself, and wanted to be able to impart the knowledge I have acquired at Harrison Clark Rickerbys and from the various businesses I have run since I leaving full time education. The thought of working with students on a commercial and creative project immediately appealed to me.

Can you tell us a bit about your role?

My role encompassed a variety of elements. One month I would be supporting them through their finances whereas the next month I would be assisting them prepare for their trade fairs, ensuring that they had considered their marketing strategy suitably.

What do you wish other people knew about Young Enterprise?

I wish other people knew just how much of a positive impact YE has on particular individuals. You never know from where the next Richard Branson will appear. I wish more people could see just how well YE encourages individuals to be flexible, creative, confident, organised and business minded.

What would be your top tip for success as a Young Enterprise volunteer?

Patience. There will be times where things will flow beautifully and times where you feel as though the students are finding it difficult and you’re not doing a decent enough job. It is natural to feel this way and patience is the key.

Why are you supporting Young Enterprise opposed to other volunteering opportunities?

I have had various businesses since leaving secondary school; from running large scale wedding shows and bridal catwalks, to designing websites and promotional material for businesses. I am now a shareholder and marketing director of my family’s company; Aisle Hire It. My aim is to not only impart the knowledge and experience that I’ve acquired over the last 7 years in business, but to infect others with my genuine passion.

As a volunteer where do you feel you have been able to make the most impact?

I hope that the students have simply enjoyed a (hopefully) friendly face and someone that has consistently supported them. You cannot underestimate the power of knowing that someone is there to work with you and support you, even when things are not necessarily going to plan.
