TUCK IN: Simon Ball, 18, from Newbury, Sophie Brocks, 16, Bethany Saunders, 16, both from Thatcham and Sharif Ahmadzal, 17, from the Hospitality, Catering & Leisure course at Newbury College.

A RECORD number of people turned out to an open evening aimed at attracting students to a host of different courses.

Newbury College laid on displays and have-a-go activities including a climbing wall, carpentry, and head and neck massages for more than 600 guests on Tuesday last week.

Visitors were shown around the college’s training restaurant, which is open to the public from 12-2pm on Wednesdays and Fridays, and got a first look at the state-of-the-art plumbing workshop due to open next month.

People could also snap up handmade jewellery created and sold by Young Enterprise team ‘Idyllic’ and staff from the ambulance services and outdoor activity company Adventure Dolphin offered careers advice.

Teachers were on hand to help Year 11 pupils decide what to do after their GCSEs and adult students discovered how they could further their career.

College principal Dr Anne Murdoch said: “The evening was a great success.

“We are delighted with the record numbers that attended and pleased that so many people are interested in the courses we offer.”
