South Yorkshire’s got Entrepreneurial Talent
Young entrepreneurs from across the South Yorkshire region, gathered in Doncaster to compete for several awards, as part of the Young Enterprise Company Programme Awards.
The entrepreneurs, from schools and colleges across the South Yorkshire region, set up their own businesses at the beginning of the academic year. After selling their products at several trade fairs and markets, most notably Sheffield’s Meadowhall shopping centre, the teams successfully competed in area finals, held in Sheffield and Doncaster, to secure places in the county final.
Held at Castle Park Conference Venue, the county final celebrated the achievements of the entrepreneurs and offered a chance to reward the teams for their hard work in setting up and running their companies successfully over the course of the year.
A total of eight awards were handed out to teams, with students from Sheffield High School taking the top prize of ‘Best Company’, as well as the ‘Teamwork’, ‘Marketing’ and ‘Financial Management’ awards. Their company, called ‘Rewire’, sells mobile phone accessories, which don’t get tangled.
‘UCan Cook AR’ from Doncaster College were named as runners up in the top category as well as winning the ’Innovation Award’ for their innovative augmented reality cook book, aimed at people with learning difficulties and disabilities.
Dearne Valley College students won the ‘Environmental Award’ and ‘Best Presentation’ for their company The Seasonal Sensations, which sells homemade jams and chutneys.
Meryl White, chair of the Young Enterprise South Yorkshire Board, said: “Every year we are amazed by the standard of businesses set up and managed by these groups of young people.
“During the Company Programme they are given support and advice to help them get their businesses off the ground.
“We have been extremely impressed by the creative thought processes and the range of successful businesses that have been set up.
“Our huge thanks go to all the businesses and volunteers in South Yorkshire who have been involved with Young Enterprise and have given their time and financial support for the Young Enterprise programmes which inspire and enable young people to get a taste of entrepreneurship.”
‘Rewire’ now have their sights set on greater success within not only the Yorkshire and Humber Regional Final on June 16th in Harrogate, but also the national finals on July 2nd in London.
