Why Volunteer?

Young Enterprise simply could not exist without the generosity and dedication of our network of 7,000 volunteers. Our volunteers are a vital part of Young Enterprise – they mentor young people, assist delivering our programmes in school or are part of the local volunteer boards that help Young Enterprise across the country.

Through volunteering you will develop essential leadership skills, enhance your understanding of how business works and it will prepare you for the next step in your career. For those of you that have retired or are, perhaps, winding down a little, this is also a unique opportunity to pass on the considerable business skills you have honed over many years. You will receive full training and support throughout your time with us.

What opportunities are available?

Whether you’d like to mentor a student company, work with primary students or join a local volunteer board, we have a volunteer role perfect for you. Young Enterprise is a single organisation made up of 11 regions across England and Wales, That means our staff are working on the ground somewhere near you and opportunities to get involved locally are available.

The benefits

Mentoring is a fantastic way to develop your own skills and to strengthen your own knowledge through teaching others. Mentoring with Young Enterprise in particular will help you gain a holistic view of how a complete business operates helping you to see the bigger picture rather than focussing on a single role or function.

As well as boosting self-confidence, communication, interpersonal and team working skills, you will also have the opportunity to meet other similarly committed local business people.

Active involvement with Young Enterprise as a Programme volunteer or Board Volunteer can contribute as structured and unstructured hours towards CPD/CPE qualification. Young Enterprise provides its volunteers with access to training and the opportunity to put into practice newly acquired insights. Rewards from volunteering include:

  • Improving your networking and recruitment potential by engaging with the emerging creative workforce;
  • Developing your managerial expertise with an emphasis on high-level communication and team skills;
  • Increasing your awareness of your own industry sector and of broader business practices beyond it;
  • Access to training and the opportunity to immediately start putting your newly acquired skills into practice;
  • Contributing towards the CPD (Continuing Professional Development) qualification requirements of many professional bodies including the CIMA, ICSA, IFS and CPS;
  • The unique satisfaction that comes from developing the next generation of enterprising professionals through your own experience and wisdom.

The businesses and volunteers that support Young Enterprise take an active role in building a more motivated, educated and inspired workforce, making a real difference to the lives and future potential of young people who live and go to school in their area.

What experience do I need?

You don’t need any previous experience or expert knowledge to become a Young Enterprise volunteer – you just need your own experience of work and enthusiasm! Our volunteers have experience which cuts across every sector of the economy. They are in employment, entrepreneurs, stay at home parents, people on a career break or retired. They have one thing in common. A desire to pass on their skills and experience of business to inspire the next generation.

You will receive full training and support to equip you to work alongside teaching staff. We ensure that your experience is enjoyable and fulfilling. Your own professional experience and enthusiasm will be invaluable.

How much time will it take?

You can choose how much – or how little – time you can give.

We have a wide range of inspiring programmes and an enthusiastic network of 7,000 volunteers delivering them.

This means you can choose how much time you wish to commit to being a Young Enterprise volunteer. Some people give us as little as an hour a week while at the other end of the scale the average volunteer business mentor helping Company Programme students offers 56 hours over the course of a year. Many of our mentors love the excitement and satisfaction of mentoring, of transforming attitudes and helping young people open their eyes to the world of enterprise, and come back year after year.
