Winchmore Comprehensive school presents Big Cheque with final total to Bank of England Chief Cashier Chris Salmon

rsz_dan_7546Here it is! The moment we have all been waiting for. We can reveal that our 10 Tenner schools made a phenomenal £4,578.49 starting with a single ten pound note!

The Bank of England’s Chief Cashier, Chris Salmon, the man whose signature appears on the note, met students from Winchmore comprehensive school in North London who carried the Big Cheque proudly bearing the total.

Young Enterprise Chief Executive Michael Mercieca spoke to them in the beautiful courtyard of the Bank saying: “Good afternoon and welcome, everyone, to the Bank of England. We are here today to celebrate the achievements of an extraordinary group of students from across the UK who took part in our Tenner Relay.

“Ten schools took part. We gave the first one, Castlehill Primary School in Glasgow, a single £10. With the help of BBC TV Dragons’ Den star Duncan Bannatyne they took up the challenge of making as much money as possible in 24 hours.

“Then they passed the tenner on in succession to nine other schools who did the same.

“I can reveal today that the ten schools have between them raised an incredible £4,578.49 which is an astonishing achievement – and testament to the hidden potential that is inside Britain’s young people waiting to be unleashed by enterprise education.

“The school in Glasgow created a car wash, then as the tenner travelled on down through the UK we had a sleepover in Nottingham, an art sale in Chester, a Red-themed day in Northamptonshire and yesterday’s amazing events that raised £576 at Winchmore School in London, to name but a few.

“One of our schools in Pembrokeshire even lost a roof in the storms but they came back a week later and held their Valentines-themed event – and it’s that determination and perseverance that we really champion.

“It’s very fitting that we end the Relay here, at the Bank of England, and celebrate what the pupils have achieved.”
