The Year So Far
This academic year the Young Enterprise Wales Team have been busy with lots of events showcasing the fantastic work of those enrolled in our programmes, engaging with more young people and schools across Wales, and making exciting upcoming plans.
We’ve been busy holding a fantastic golf fundraising event and we’ve set the dates for the local finals and the Wales Company of the Year Final.
Company Programme Launch
In early November we held a launch event for our Company Programme in South Wales. This was a fun and inspiring day in the great incubation centre ‘Welsh Ice’, with a speech from the founder himself Gareth Jones – who is a Young Enterprise Alumnus – and the chance to meet and chat with real entrepreneurs running their businesses from the centre. An exciting event which left our students raring to go!
On 30th November and 1st December Sarah and Andrew held successful Christmas Markets at IKEA Cardiff. Many schools from across South and West Wales came together and set up their stands in the foyer to sell their great products and services to the public. This was a really successful event on both days, which gave all those involved an insightful taster into the world of trade and sales, and a chance to show off their company and products! Andrew and the YE Newport and Monmouthshire Local Volunteer Board also held a Christmas Market at the Kingsway Shopping Centre in Newport.
This year we are thrilled to have 5 companies from the University of South Wales running in our Start Up Programme. These were chosen by a dragons den style process in which along side the Dean of faculty, Sarah played the part of a Dragon! We are now heading towards the competition to find a worthy Welsh Finalist for the UK Start up Final that is being held in London.
We have recently held our first teacher consultation in Cardiff to engage with schools to find out some of the difficulties and challenges teachers are facing with the new Welsh Baccalaureate. We found this first session very enlightening and will be holding more around Wales to gain a better understanding of how we can help our young people successfully complete their Welsh Bacc Enterprise and Employability Challenge with the support of our Young Enterprise programmes and resources.
Selwyn has been busy in North Wales with a variety of different master classes being delivered to over 300 students and more in the pipeline, including the HSBC supported ‘Launch pad’ which gives students a great inside to starting their own business and an introduction to the Welsh Baccalaureate business activity.
In South Wales Sarah and Andrew have just confirmed an exciting engineering Master class called ‘Chain Reaction’ which will be going ahead in March and will include students from across South and West wales. ‘Chain Reaction’ is a series of exciting and educational challenges, activities and discussions designed to help young people recognise, develop, and apply personal skills for innovation, enterprise and employability using the STEM sector as inspiration.
