Shoppers in central Bristol were among the first to see and buy a range of brand new products and services developed by the Young Enterprise teams taking part in the Company Programme across Bristol, South Gloucestershire, Bath and North East Somerset.

14 out of the 17 teams taking part in the competition exhibited at the Spring Trade Fair event that took place on Saturday 1st March in The Galleries and Cabot Circus, kindly supported by Bristol Shopping Quarter.

Caroline Tarbuck, manager for Young Enterprise, West of England said: “It was a fantastic day and definitely the most exciting part of the competition so far.

“The teams have spent the last six months working with voluntary members of the business community to develop and bring to market their idea, and the Spring Trade Fair gave them all the opportunity to sell their products and services to the general public for the first time.”

John Hirst, chief executive of Destination Bristol, who was one of the judges said: “We are really pleased to be supporting the Young Enterprise Spring Trade Fair and I was very impressed with these young people and their stands.

“The judging was a difficult process with lots of great ideas being turned into real businesses.”

Two prizes were presented for Best Stand and Best Customer Service in each shopping centre. In The Galleries the team from Backwell School won both prizes for their business,  ‘The Green Fire Company’, making fire pits out of old recycled washing machine drums. Priced at £35 each they sold six on the day and took a number of orders.

The regional heats take place on 27th and 31st March with 10 schools going through to the Area Final at Clevedon Hall.

The overall winner will then represent the West of England at the Regional Final which will take place on 16 June at the Steam Museum in Swindon.
