Young entrepreneurs to go head to head in battle to be the UK’s best start up company

A total of ten university and FE college teams will compete to be the Young Enterprise Start-Up Company of the Year 2016 at the UK Final on the 31st May at 1 Wimpole Street. The overall winning team will also go on to represent the UK at the Start-Up European final in Bucharest in July.

The Start-Up Programme is run by Young Enterprise and supported by Old Mutual Wealth UK, through both funding and mentoring. It runs in 38 universities and further education colleges, and this year 1,623 students enrolled, forming 294 teams. Start-Up enables students to set up and run their own business for an academic year, with the opportunity to sell to the public at trade fairs, and go up against other teams in the national competition, which starts at local level. The programme is designed to empower students in further and higher education on their journey towards employment.

Many of the students taking part in Start-Up graduate with a small business to take forward and develop, and previous Start-Up winners have gone on to win investment on Dragon’s Den.

Old Mutual Wealth chief of staff Tracey Hahn, said: “It is really important that young people develop the skills and knowledge that will allow them to enter the world of work and we’re really pleased to be able to support this fantastic project, which helps to nurture talent and encourage young people to aspire to achieve great things.

“The success of the Start-Up project shows what remarkable things young people can achieve and I hope the endeavour and ambition of these young entrepreneurs can provide inspiration to their peers.”

Young Enterprise chief executive Michael Mercieca, said: “Start-Up offers a real opportunity to get into business and start out as an entrepreneur. Its always exciting to see how many students take part in the programme each year and what products they create, so I look forward to meeting this year’s top teams at the UK Final.”
