MyBnk

Young people in the UK are the group most affected economically by the current pandemic.

Money lessons have an important role to play in helping young adults deal with the fallout and preparing others to transition into independent living, in what is sure to be a challenging post-covid landscape.

MyBnk is a UK charity that delivers expert-led money programmes to 5-25-year olds in schools and youth organisations. Like many in this niche sector we’ve been working hard to ensure no young person misses out on their financial education.

Since lockdown MyBnk has helped thousands of young people learn to save, cut costs and take control of their money – and this Talk Money Week we’ll be reaching many more.

We restarted covid-secure in-person workshops alongside delivering expert-led virtual alternatives. This is complemented by new free home school courses and a range of online tools and guides for young adults.

Here’s some of our latest work across the UK:

  • We’ve opened a fourth location of the accredited youth homeless prevention scheme, The Money House. In real flats, and via Zoom, we teach vulnerable young people on the pathway to social housing, how to keep their first home. The new hub in the London borough of Haringey joins the City of Westminster, the Royal Borough of Greenwich and Newham in tackling homelessness through financial education. Run with the Berkeley and JP Morgan Chase Foundations, Pimco and L&Q.
  • We’ve turned many of our core programmes virtual meaning primary school and Sixth Form pupils and young adults in vulnerable circumstances, such as leaving care, can still receive a meaningful financial education.
  • MyBnk have launched a five-step tool helping First Years and Sixth Formers become financially independent at university. It includes an animated video, chatbot and written guides covering student finance, banking, borrowing, budgeting and spending.
  • We have also published a range of specialist uni money tools for visually impaired students with the Thomas Pocklington Trust. Student Dosh forms part of the Money Mechanics young sensory impairment project.
  • Finally Family Money Buzz: Energy Detectives. Created with UK Power Networks for 9-11 year olds. This new online environmental themed financial education course teaches children how to save energy and the planet. These courses can be run by parents, guardians, and children or be incorporated into educators’ adapted curriculums.
