Applied Learning and Financial Education

Last year, Young Enterprise commissioned the report,What Applied Learning Really Looks Like’  to explore the benefits, challenges and solutions to embedding applied learning into teaching practice. This includes examples of applied learning supporting financial education in schools.

We have now followed this up with a newly published brochure and webpage on applied learning, setting out a definition and exploring its potential as a cost-effective way of increasing young people’s engagement with the topic and improving their financial capability to better prepare them for the real world.

Call for support with our applied learning open letter

Linked to above, we have written an open letter to Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt and Rt Hon Gillian Keegan with three asks to support greater uptake of applied learning across the education system. We are inviting organisations with an interest in this important area to co-sign the letter which will go a long way to increasing the impact of this cause.  We would be very grateful for your support. Please find more information at the link here.

New wave of fully-funded financial education teacher training

This summer we have been working with the Money and Pensions Service on an exciting project to develop our financial education teacher training and we launched our updated offer in September. This covers training sessions for the following groups:

  • Senior leaders: We have developed a brand-new training session for Senior Leaders which works with them to unlock opportunities for embedding financial education in their schools, working through ways to overcome barriers and to help free up training time for their teaching staff.
  • Secondary teachers: We will shortly be offering focused sessions for teachers delivering financial education in three contexts: PSHE lessons; through an integrated curriculum approach; and in tutor time.  These sessions will all be delivered in two parts with plenty of dates to choose from.
  • Primary teachers: Separate to above, we will continue to run our popular Money Heroes financial education training sessions for primary teachers (funded by HSBC UK) with sessions running in October, November and February.
  • SEND: We have also updated our teacher training offer for SEND teachers and have sessions running in November, December and January.

Young Enterprise Teacher Conference 2023

Our annual teacher conference will be taking place on 6th December in central London. The theme for this year’s event will be applied learning, and we will be hearing from practitioners who have successfully embedded practical learning experiences into their curriculum.
