The Young Money Challenge is:
The Challenge is an annual programme that encourages children and young people to consider the connection between money management and wider issues affecting local and global communities.

This year, we explored the connection between money management and health and wellbeing.
The Challenge was hugely successful, with over 2,500 children and young people participating across the UK.
Congratulations to all our winners! The judges didn’t have an easy job at all as the quality of entries was particularly high but after much deliberation, and with thanks to Capita and a very special panel of judges who helped us with this particularly difficult task, we chose our 9 winning entries.
The creativity, thoughtfulness and evident understanding of physical, mental and financial health and wellbeing made these submissions absolutely stand out! Check out the winners’ incredible entries, and hear from them and their teachers about why they found taking part in the Challenge so rewarding!

Leo Unler: Age 7
Dair House School
The judges were so impressed by Leo’s thoughtful response to the challenge. They loved his fun & fully developed game. Leo showed an excellent understanding of money, not only by choosing free and fun activities for all the family but also by considering how others could recreate his game without spending much money! Leo told us in his summary sheet that he “chose the game because children of all ages and adults can play because the rules are easy. You don’t need to spend any money because you can make your own board and counters and borrow a dice from another game”.
Carlotta Trapani: Age 7
Dair House School
The judges really loved Carlotta’s bright and memorable poster of Connie the Caterpillar, with a free activity for each day of the week. They were particularly impressed with her message that staying active can make us happy and healthy! She really understood that, in her words, there are lots of ‘no equipment’ exercises you can do for free!

Ruby Chambers: Age 7
The John Bamford Primary School
The judges were really impressed with Ruby’s creative use of the Bingo idea to encourage people to be healthy and active. They loved her illustrations and all agreed that having one free exercise to do a day was a great way to motivate people to keep healthy.
Evie Lightman and Darcey Irving: Age 11
Mathilda Marks Kennedy School
The judges were really impressed with Evie & Darcey’s money box. Not only was the idea so well thought out but the execution of a working prototype was excellent too. The judges all thought the money box was an excellent toy that would help children learn about money and stay happy and healthy too! Their response on their summary sheet to what they learnt about health and wellbeing perfectly shows the thoughtful and creative approach of the girls to the challenge:
“We learnt that saving money can be fun and we incorporated this into our invention, as we wanted children to feel good about themselves which will make them want to save money. We also learnt that saving money will not only help your financial health, it can also help your mental health because you will feel financially stable which will prevent stress that may occur in the future.”

Alex Peston: Age 11
Mathilda Marks Kennedy School
The judges were so impressed with Alex’s mature approach to the challenge. His detailed, excellently researched presentation with relevant and current examples will absolutely resonate with children transitioning to secondary school and help them during this uncertain time. The advice he provided in his summary sheet to help people look after their health and wellbeing and their money perfectly demonstrates his thoughtful and mature response to the challenge:
“If I had to give a piece of advice, I would say that you should do whatever works for you and that it’s okay to ask people for help. You should also consider saving a bit of your allowance every week and trying other sorts of saving methods.”

Ellis Francis: Age 10
Clanfield COE Primary School
The judges were really impressed with Ellis’s striking and memorable poster. His approach to raising awareness was so professional. The combination of such a strong message and beautiful illustrations made the poster definitely stand out! Ellis clearly demonstrated excellent learning in his summary sheet, telling us,
“I’ve learnt more about the value of money. I also learned that a lot of healthier food is cheaper than buying fast food and keeps you fuller for longer. I was not as keen to spend my own pocket money at the shops I had earned doing jobs helping my parents out!”
Ellis has recorded us a short message to tell us about the inspiration for this poster and how he hopes it will help people remember to look after their money and their health and wellbeing!
Jessica Brown: Age 15
Stadbroke High School
The judges were really impressed with Jessica’s haunting and memorable poster. Her beautifully drawn illustration so successfully depicts the impact social media can have on young people’s mental & financial health & wellbeing. Her learning from the challenge also really reflected the challenges young people face when using social media:
“ I have learnt how easy it is to spend money and forget managing it entirely when on social sites and presented with advertisements everyday that you might not usually see otherwise and therefore you might spend more unconsciously”.

Lara Winn – Smith: Age 12
Tormead School
The judges were so impressed with Lara’s comprehensive guide to making sensible choices when shopping – she explored a wide variety of products and discussed the impact spending money on these items could have on your physical, mental and financial health. Her website wireframe ( 13 detailed pages) was so mature and considered in its approach – providing tools including fully developed questionnaires, to help individuals make choices that were right for them. Her hard work and excellent understanding of money choices definitely stood out. Lara demonstrated excellent learning during the challenge, telling us:
“What I learnt about health and wellbeing from taking part in this challenge is that money and choices can actually have an impact on other things in your life. I have never actually realised the impact it can have on you”.
Sheryar Habib and Hamza Hussain: Age 12 & 13
The Lancaster Academy
The judges were really impressed with Sheryar and Hamza’s innovative and original idea. The team really understood how incentives could help motivate people to stay healthy and happy! The boys demonstrated excellent learning about money during the challenge, telling us that they learnt that ‘ it is more beneficial to save your money for a while’ and that they would ‘advise people to be smart with their money by saving up’.

In our inaugural year, we explored the connection between money management and environmental sustainability.
The Challenge was hugely successful, with around 1000 children and young people participating across the UK. We were extremely impressed by the outstanding entries, and overwhelmed by the passion shown by young people for money management, the environment, and their communities.

Waldringfield Primary School
The judges loved Florence’s strong, relatable message and her wonderfully creative and memorable superhero. Thanks for reminding us that we can help save the planet by just doing such a simple thing as turning off our lights!
Jake Ashton: Age 5
Cunningham Hill Infant School
The judges were really impressed with Jake’s creative superhero, they thought the design was really clever and Jake’s call to action for people to turn off their lights was simple but very effective!
Jonah James: Age 4
Cunningham Hill Infant School
Jonah’s super hero was so creative. He chose powers that were all clearly connected to protecting the planet. The judges were also very touched that he chose to name his superhero after his new baby sister!
Zaynah Thompson: Age 7
St Anne’s RC Primary School
The judges were really impressed with Zaynah’s creative and thoughtful entry. It was evident that she spent a lot of time creating her campaign material and exploring the impacts of fast fashion. She chose a really clever example to show how we can all do something very simple to make a big difference.
Jack Littlewood: Age 11
St John Vianney Catholic Primary School
The judges were really impressed with the maturity of Jack’s entry. His message was extremely strong and the judges felt it could easily have been a piece of professional campaign material!
Freya Cooke: Age 11

Freya’s entry was so creative and impactful and her message was memorable and clear. Including the photo of a cottage pie was particularly clever as it showed the practical things we can do to save money and protect the environment. We also all loved her call to action to become a ‘waste-free superhero!’

Woldingham School
The judges were so impressed by their beautifully vibrant and eye-catching poster as well as their simple and achievable solutions to food waste.All their materials were very well researched and we all learnt something from them!
Phoebe Whittingham, Lily Stockford & Bethany Rose-Michael: Age 13

The judges were so impressed by their memorable campaign material and their very strong campaign message. Their well researched article really demonstrated how much they care about the issue of fast fashion.

The judges were so impressed by her beautifully presented poster and her extremely strong and relatable message. Kristina demonstrated a comprehensive understanding of the simple things we can do to avoid energy waste and presented these in an engaging and accessible way.

“If I’m completely honest, I just love trying to provide opportunities for learning with purpose for my Squiggles class. When I suggested to the class, we took part in the Young Money challenge, I had 11 children in our school bubble, and 19 at home! Florence worked on the challenge at school and we are so unbelievably proud of her. She is a special, special girl who deserves all of the wonderful joys and sparkles that come her way! We will definitely be taking part in the challenge next year… hopefully in a more ‘pandemic free’ way!”

When we were approached to enter a challenge called “young money” it was too much of a good opportunity to miss. Not only did it make links to our Maths and PSHE Curriculum, but also British Values and SMSC. Children are never too young to start to think about the connection between money and their local and wider communities.
Zaynah is our overall winner for Category Two!

“I was thrilled to have been chosen as a winner and really enjoyed doing the work. It was a great opportunity to find out more about food waste and how my family could improve our food waste footprint. Thank you for the opportunity; I would definitely enter again!”
